Wildlife Pond or Bog Garden
A wildlife pond in your garden or wildlife area, is a great way of inviting wildlife including amphibians, insects and birds into your garden. Children love observing the life-cycle of frogs and toads and pond dipping.
Pledge 1 - Create a Wildlife Pond
Here is some basic advice, and some useful guides.
Frogs and other amphibians prefer Larger Ponds - over 2 meters in diameter - download FROGLIFE's guide Just Add Water.
For Advice on what to plant and looking after your pond - download this guide from Wild About Gardens - Big or Small, Ponds for All.
- Size does not matter you can even make a mini pond made from an old washing up bowl.
- The shape of the pond doesn’t matter, as long as there is a way for wildlife to get in and out. A good solution is to have a shallow sloping side and a variety of depths that attract different species of wildlife and water-plant.
- Plants (please try to use UK native species) are an important part of your wildlife pond, oxygenating the water and providing food and shelter. Add lots of low-growing, dense foliage outside the pond is good for attracting wildlife.
- Avoid introducing fish to your pond as they can significantly reduce the wildlife value.

Pledge 2 - Make a Bog Garden
If you are not sure about having a pond an alternative choice could be to create a bog garden. You can even make a bog garden in a container if you're very short of space. A bog garden could be created as an extension to your wildlife pond.
